CHAPTER I - INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Education is very important to every citizen of the world. This is also true in the Philippines since many parents said that this is the only thing that they can leave with their children. But who is more responsible in giving this education or this dream?

Public elementary school teachers mold the mind of the young children specially the poor children here in the Philippines. They are the model of the children of this country, the Philippines. They are the ones who give the education to the critical stage or the early development of the minds of almost 95% of the country’s children population. They are even called by some as unsung heroes.

There are many problems faced by these teachers or educators nowadays like low salary, few benefits, lack of proper trainings / seminars, lack of classrooms, overworked and many more. Due to these problems, it caused so many problems of this country like brain drain, teachers’ deep in debt, students’ not getting quality education, and thus created unequipped citizen to function properly.

It is the goal of this study to focus only on one aspect and leave the others like increase in wages, classrooms and others to the government. This study will focus more on the financial literacy of these public school teachers. The goal of this study is to give an option to the teachers who want to be proactive, rather than be reactive to the actions of the Philippine government.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
General Objective:
To know the level of financial literacy of the public school teachers and suggest how they can be improved.

Specific Objectives:
  1. To identify the reasons why most of the public school teachers are deep in debt.
  2. To look for ways on how the teacher’s financial literacy can be increased specifically by understanding financial statement and balance sheet, and thus improved their financial well-being.
  3. To raise the level of financial literacy of public school teachers.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
This study will focus only on one aspect of the public school teacher’s problem which is why they are deep in debt. This will look for ways or solutions that these noble teachers can do for themselves and not merely become dependent on the government of the Philippines for their family’s future.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
Nowadays, many public school teachers can not teach well or focus on their teaching because they are deep in debt or are living in debt. The growing numbers of teachers who are deep in debt are very alarming because it causes other major problems of the Philippines as well.
This study will look for practical ways for these teachers to follow and thus help the Philippine government solve some problems by ourselves and thus the government can focus on some other problems in building a great nation.
